Hermione talks about the impact of university on her sense of identity

Chapter details: Hermione explains how the diversity of people and experiences at university have contributed hugely to her personal development and sense of identity

Transcript:

I think that when you come to university you are in amongst a lot of different sorts of people.  You are spending time with mature students, you are spending time with international students and time with students from all over the country and these people have had very very different experiences to the ones you have had with people that you have been at school with.  You tend to sort of cluster into similar experiences when you are at school but when you are at university you get thrown with all different sorts of people.  It really does make you think about different people and different identities and what you think about yourself and also the sort of person that you want to be.

So I think university plays a very big part in shaping people's personal identities and it often draws out characteristics a lot more. I think for example I have always been a very confident person but since I have come to university it's really drawn out my confidence quite a lot. So I think that I have a stronger sense of identity now than I did in the past and also different aspects of my character have changed given the different experiences I have had and the different people I have met.
